What

The New Urbanism Initiative, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, is the United States's first independent youth-led organization advocating for more livable and equitable cities. Through policy research, political advocacy, and sparking civic engagement, NUI fights for affordable, reliable public transit; walkable, bikeable streets; and reduced car dependence.

Why

NUI was originally founded to rally support for California’s SB63, a San Francisco Bay Area tax measure that would provide billions to transit agencies facing major deficits after COVID-driven ridership losses, preventing critical service cuts. However, NUI is built on the broader belief that car-dependent American cities must become more livable and equitable, giving youth, seniors, low-income residents, and people with disabilities better access to opportunity while making cities safer, healthier, more beautiful, and more environmentally-friendly.
